1. Sunrise from Thorong La, 5,416 m
Where: the top of the pass on the Annapurna Circuit.
Months: October to November & April to May
Nothing else in Nepal is like standing at 5,416 m with a bike, in air holding about half the oxygen of sea level, watching the sun come up on the Annapurna range behind you and the whole brown expanse of Mustang opening in front. It is the highest point any mountain biker reaches on a standard route in this country, and it is the reason the Annapurna Circuit is the trip everyone names.
You will be there at dawn whether you want to be or not, because pass day starts in the dark. Groups leave High Camp or Thorong Phedi between 04:00 and 05:00 to cross before the afternoon wind picks up. So the best view on the list is one you get by default, if the weather holds.
Then you turn around and ride 1,616 m of continuous descent down to Muktinath, which is the finest thing that happens to anyone on a bike in Nepal.

2. The floor of the Kali Gandaki gorge
Where: the riverbed between Tukuche and Kagbeni.
Months: October to December.
This is the deepest gorge on earth, and the numbers barely convey it. You ride a wide grey riverbed at around 2,500 m with Dhaulagiri at 8,167 m on your left and Annapurna I at 8,091 m on your right. The vertical distance from the riverbed to either summit is over five and a half kilometres. There is nowhere else on the planet you can stand between two 8,000 m peaks at the bottom of a valley they both rise out of.
What makes it beautiful rather than merely enormous is the scale confusion. The riverbed is so wide and so flat that you lose all sense of distance, and the peaks look close enough to touch while being a full day's flight of imagination away.

3. Lo Manthang and the Mustang canyons
Where: the approach over the Lo La at about 4,230 m.
Months: May to October
The whole of Upper Mustang looks like somewhere else. Behind the main Himalayan wall, the rain stops, and the land turns to eroded red, ochre and grey badlands, cut into fins and cliffs and honeycombed with man-made caves that nobody has fully explained. Then you come over the Lo La, and there is a walled medieval city sitting in the middle of it, mud-brick, four storeys, still lived in.
Lo Manthang was the capital of an independent kingdom and stayed closed to outsiders until 1992. That is why it survived, and why it still needs a restricted-area permit to reach.
This is the only entry on the list where the best light is late in the day, not early. The canyon walls take colour in the last hour before sunset in a way they simply do not at dawn.

4. The Pikey Peak summit ridge
Where: the summit ridge at 4,065 m, Solukhumbu.
Months: October to November, March to April.
From the Pikey Ridge at dawn, you can see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Kanchenjunga at once. Four of the world's six highest mountains, in a single sweep, with nothing in front of them. Sir Edmund Hillary is widely quoted as having called this his favourite view in Nepal, and having stood there at sunrise, it is easy to believe.
The reason it matters to a mountain biker specifically is that bikes are banned inside Sagarmatha National Park. The classic Everest Base Camp route is closed to you. Pikey sits outside the park boundary in the same district, which makes it the closest a rider legally gets to that skyline, and you ride to the top of it.
You will also have it almost to yourself. The trekking traffic goes to the Khumbu.

5. Tilicho Lake, 4,919 m
Where: the lake shore below Tilicho Peak.
Months: late April to May, October.
Tilicho is the highest lake of its size anywhere on earth, and the colour is the thing. A hard turquoise that does not look like it belongs at nearly 5,000 m, held in a bare rock bowl under Tilicho Peak with the Grande Barrière behind it. There is no vegetation, no village, and almost no sound.
The reason it is fifth rather than first is that it is often frozen. In October you may find it half iced over and grey. Late April into May, once the melt has started but before the monsoon haze, is when the colour is at its best. Late morning, when the sun is high enough to be in the water rather than on it.
Two things worth correcting, because both circulate widely and one of them used to be on this page. Rara is Nepal's largest lake, not its highest. Tilicho at 4,919 m is the high one, nearly two kilometres above Rara.

6. The Ghyaru to Ngawal high traverse
Where: the high line above the Marsyangdi, around 3,700 m.
Months: October to November. Hour: any; it faces the view all day.
This is the connoisseur's entry. Most people on the Annapurna Circuit take the valley road from Pisang to Manang. The high line climbs steeply to the village of Ghyaru and then runs a balcony traverse to Ngawal with the entire Annapurna wall directly across the valley: Annapurna II, III and IV and Gangapurna, a continuous barrier of ice and rock two kilometres above you and close enough to see avalanche debris move.
It is beautiful in a way the big set-piece views are not, because you are inside it for two hours rather than looking at it from a summit for twenty minutes. The riding is also the best part of that half of the trip.
The climb to Ghyaru is brutal, and a lot of groups skip it. That is what keeps it quiet.

7. Rara Lake shoreline
Where: the northern shore, Mugu district.
Months: May to June, September to October.
Rara is Nepal's largest lake, nearly eleven square kilometres of clear blue water at 2,990 m, ringed by blue pine and juniper inside the country's smallest national park. Early on a still morning, the whole Himalayan skyline to the north lies flat on the surface of it, and there is nobody there to watch it with you.
That emptiness is the point. Karnali province gets a tiny fraction of Nepal's visitors. The forest riding around the shore is unlike anything in the Annapurna region, quiet and soft underfoot, and the lake stays out of sight until you are almost on it.
It sits seventh only because of how hard it is to reach. On pure view, it would be higher.

8. Sunrise from Sarangkot over Phewa Lake
Where: Sarangkot ridge, 1,592 m, above Pokhara.
Months: October to February.
The most accessible great view in Nepal, and it holds its place on this list on merit. You climb from Pokhara lakeside in the dark, and as the light comes up, you have Phewa Lake 800 m below you with mist sitting on it, and Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and the Annapurna range going pink above. Machhapuchhre is 6,993 m and only about 25 km away, which is why it looks the way it does.
Then you ride back down into town for breakfast. The whole thing takes a morning and needs no permit, no altitude, and no expedition.
Winter is the season people get wrong here. December and January are cold and clear, with the monsoon dust washed out and the sharpest mountain definition of the year.

9. Kyanjin Ri and the Langtang glacier headwall
Where: above Kyanjin Gompa, up to 4,984 m.
Months: October to November, March to April.
You ride up the Langtang valley through oak and rhododendron forest, come out above the treeline into yak pasture, and the valley closes into a wall: Langtang Lirung at 7,227 m with its glacier hanging directly over the village. From the ridge above Kyanjin Gompa, the whole head of the valley is in front of you at once, ice and moraine and grey rock, close enough that you hear it.
It is the closest glacier country to Kathmandu, about seven hours of driving, with no domestic flight needed. That makes it the shortest route to a genuine high alpine view in Nepal.
The valley was destroyed by the 2015 earthquake and rebuilt by the Tamang families who live there. Riding here puts money straight into a community that needs it, which is part of why it is on the list.

10. Marpha, Muktinath and the Mustang apple villages
Where: Marpha village and Muktinath at 3,760 m.
Months: October to November, apple harvest.
Not every beautiful thing in Nepal is a mountain. Marpha is a Thakali village of whitewashed stone houses, flagstone lanes and flat roofs stacked with drying firewood, set in apple orchards under Nilgiri. In October the orchards are heavy, the village distils its own apple brandy, and it is one of the most pleasant places to stop anywhere in the country.
Above it, Muktinath at 3,760 m is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, with 108 water spouts along a stone wall and an eternal flame burning on natural gas behind the temple. Pilgrims have been walking here for well over a thousand years. You arrive by bike, having just descended 1,616 m from Thorong La, and the contrast is part of it.
Below Muktinath, the Lubra valley singletrack drops through eroded blue and grey rock formations that look like a different planet.

When is the best month for mountain views in Nepal?
October and November. The monsoon finishes in late September and leaves the clearest air of the year behind it, which is why almost every entry on this list names those two months. Spring from March to May is warmer and has rhododendron in flower, but the haze builds steadily through it. Winter gives the sharpest definition of all, but only on the low routes, because the high passes are snowed in.
What time of day should I ride for the best views?
Sunrise, on almost every route in this list. Nepal's valley cloud starts building around 11:00 in both main seasons, and in Mustang the up-valley wind gets up at about the same hour. The mountains are out at dawn and gone by lunchtime. The single exception here is Lo Manthang and the Upper Mustang canyons, where the rock takes its best colour in the last hour before sunset.
Are the mountains visible during the monsoon?
Mostly no, and this is the thing that ruins summer trips. From June to August, the cloud sits on the hills across most of Nepal, and the big peaks are hidden for days at a time, so you get the riding without the reason you came. The exception is Mustang, behind the main Himalayan wall in the rain shadow, where the sky stays open, and Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri are out most mornings. If you can only travel in the northern summer, go to Mustang and do not gamble on anywhere else.
Which of these views can I see in a single day?
Only one, and it is number eight. Sarangkot is a morning trip from a Pokhara hotel, with no permit, no altitude, and no expedition, and it still gives you Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South over a misted lake. Everything else on this page needs a minimum of seven days, because the views that make the top of the list sit a week of riding from the nearest road head. If you have two or three days rather than one, the Royal Trek overnight and the Kathmandu Valley Rim add more Himalayan skyline without committing you to a trip.
Can I fly a drone on these trails?
Only with permission, and in some places not at all. Drone flights in Nepal need clearance from the Civil Aviation Authority, and national parks, conservation areas, and restricted areas each require their own separate permission on top of that. Upper Mustang is restricted, and clearance is routinely refused there. Tell us before you book if drone footage matters to your trip, and we will tell you what is realistically achievable on that route. Check the current rules close to your travel date, because they have changed more than once.
Are the beautiful trails the same as the best trails to ride?
No, and it is worth being honest about that. The finest view on this list is a twenty-minute sunrise at the top of a pass you pushed a bike up. The finest riding in Nepal is somewhere else entirely.
