2 of us recently did the Lower Mustang tour over the Christmas and New Year break. Can’t be happier that we chose Pokhara Mountain Bike Adventure, having stumbled across them on google. This is an extremely well and smoothly run local operator. We were taken good care of from the beginning to end by Jagan’s very warm and friendly team, and benefited hugely from their local expertise. For the cycling, we opted for 2 days in Pokhara as warm up, then 8 days up in the mountains. Most days involved a mix of jeep track and singletrack with changing breathtaking scenery from lakes, icy peaks, strange rock formations with caves, big hills, river, gorge, forest… Though road-bikers at heart, we thoroughly enjoyed every single day and embraced the switch to MTB in this beautiful Himalayan setting, going over mountain passes, cycling through small mountain villages, stream crossings… Our guide Suman was an incredible rider (a professional MTB racer) and immense fun. He coped well with us having mixed levels. I was the less confident rider having never tried MTB before but felt completely safe under his guidance - he made good judgement on which parts to walk, helped me carry my bike for the really steep parts, and even gave us free coaching! We took the riding at quite a leisurely pace (usually all before lunch), and had plenty of time to take in the scenery, take photos, stop off at temples and villages etc. But there was also ample opportunity for additional riding in the afternoon. This flexibility made the trip so relaxing and enjoyable, in stark contrast to organised group cycling trips that we’ve done in the past. Also cannot recommend enough traveling during this Christmas holiday period to avoid the crowd. We had clear skies daily, and the mountains and guest houses all to ourselves! It did get cold at night up at high altitude, but the day time temperature for riding was perfect.
